Ofsted Report 2019
Our recent Ofsted inspection recognised that JSTC has experienced a difficult period in its history with the unexpected retirement of the Headteacher in 2017-18. The school however is now in a strong position to build on the many strengths identified in the report including talented staff and leaders who are ambitious for the students to ensure that the quality of education offered to is of the highest of standards. The report describes the ambition and strategic vision that leaders have as good with focused school improvement planning in place. Leaders are recognised as setting students challenging targets so that students know what they need to achieve. Staff are proud to work at the school and students are equally proud of being a part of the student body at JSTC. Students report that they are well supported in their studies and feel safe at school.
With passionate middle leadership developing approaches that are starting to improve students overall progress we are confident that the outcomes for students will rise. As a school we are hugely committed to raising outcomes for all students at all levels. String progress is seen in a number of subjects and through our professional development programme = praised by Ofsted for its bespoke focus – we will ensure that the highest of standards are consistently achieved.
The school operates a 2 year KS3 curriculum and Ofsted recognised that this was both appropriate and well led. The breadth of the curriculum offer both at KS3 and 4 was described as almost unique and demonstrated a commitment to the development of the different talents that our students have. The work of the SEND team was recognised as being caring and supportive of student’s development. Governance at the school is strong and leaders work effectively with the Governing Body. We always welcome enquiries about becoming involved with the Governing Body to continue to add diversity of experience to this area.
Safeguarding is effective and students are protected via robust systems. Behaviour in the school is good – as noted also in the last inspection - and Ofsted recognised that leaders have indeed raised the bar on standards of behaviour to ensure that high quality teaching and learning is evident across the school. With a newly re-shaped pastoral system in school students are supported in school to help them reach their challenging targets, feel safe and fulfil their ambitions.
As a stand alone academy we recognise the need to work collaboratively with external organisations and Ofsted were impressed with the links that we have created to ensure staff and students have access to world class support and research to inform our practice.
Please take time to read the Ofsted report. We are sure that you will be able to see the journey the school is taking to raise the bar with respect to both outcomes and aspirations for our students.
