SkillsActive is the officially recognised and licensed organisation that sets the best quality standards for skills, offers effective training solutions and facilitates career development in the sport, fitness, outdoors, playwork and caravan industries.
SkillsActive is licensed as the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being. We also have a number of associated brands who work with specific people and sectors to provide them with the training solutions relevant to their needs. The National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure delivers specific projects aimed at employers. The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) identifies individuals in the fitness industry as qualified and recognised professionals. Caravan Industry Training (CITO) sets standards for the caravan industry.
SkillsActive works across five key sectors: sport, fitness, outdoors, playwork and caravans. We engage with key employers, set standards for relevant sector qualifications, approve training providers and provide information on the career options available.
With a workforce of 371,800 people, working in 176,000 businesses and organisations throughout the UK, sport is one of SkillsActive's largest sectors.
Our work in the sector covers grass-roots right through to high performance sport.
We ensure the sector has suitably qualified employees and volunteers to support the delivery of sport activities and to help the government achieve its objective of a healthier, fitter nation.
To find out more about the sector, such as qualifications and standards, follow the links below or on the left hand side, or get in touch with us through one of our regional contacts.
The fitness industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK economy.
We help the sector cater for the growing number of fitness club and leisure centre users by developing qualification frameworks that meet the needs of the sector – ensuring fitness graduates leave college or university with recognised skills.
Through our exercise and fitness Technical Expert Group (TEG), we also endorse courses for entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and offer advice and support to training providers wanting to ensure their courses meet this standard.
The UK outdoors sector covers a wide-range of leisure, learning and well-being activities undertaken within the natural environment.
Activity within the sector can be broadly divided into five key sub-areas:
  • Outdoor education - experiential, environmental, physical and social education
  • Outdoor recreation - organised and self-guided outdoor activities for ‘fun’
  • Outdoor development training - leadership, team and management development
  • Outdoor sport development - performance coaching, instructor training and skill development
  • Expeditions and exploration - planning and delivery of local, national and international expeditions
