  BTEC First Certificate in Children’s Care, Learning and Development      
  Level 2 qualification equivalent to 2 grade Cs      
  2 year course      
 
  • An opportunity to experience a vocational qualification. 
  • It is a taster qualification in Child Care which will lead to BTEC qualifications at higher levels e.g. First Diploma ( taken at colleges post 16)
     
  3 Units of work      
 
  1. Understanding Child Development
  2. Keeping children safe
  3. Communication with children and adults
  4. Units 1 and 3 involve work placements of 30 hours
     
  Work placements      
 
  • This will involve each student undertaking 60 hours in either:
    • a Reception or KS1 class at a local primary school
    • A local nursery
    • A pre school group
     
 
  • Each student will hopefully visit 2 different venues during the 2 year course
     
  Assessment      
 
  • This course is 100% evidence of students achieving the learning outcomes for each unit.
  • Each student assembles a folder of evidence of their capabilities
  • Evidence may be written work, witness statements, discussions, plans, reports, presentations, etc
     
  Levels of achievement      
 
  • Each student will work to complete assignments set and assessed in college
  • Students will aim to complete all the grading criteria for Pass, Merit or Distinction
  • The assembled work will be checked and verified externally in order for students to achieve their final qualification
     
  Unit 1      
 
  • The growth and development of children up to 16 years
  • Understand the role of observation on children’s development in the workplace
  • Know how to observe children’s development
  • Understand the importance of planning in supporting children’s needs and development
     
  Unit 2      
 
  • Understand how to prepare and maintain a safe and secure environment for children
  • Know how to support the protection of children from abuse
  • Understand how to maintain the safety of children on outings
  • Know how to deal with accidents, illness and emergencies
     
  Unit 3      
 
  • Understand the key features of effective interpersonal communication
  • Understand how to interact and communicate with children
  • Understand how to interact and communicate with adults
